National Pub Sevens 2011 - Report

Sunday 28th August 2011 saw almost 40 teams at the 46th annual National Pub 7s hosted by Harpenden RFC at their Redbourn Lane ground in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. The Singleton Cup competition was, as always, of a suitably high standard. The eventual winners were perennial visitors the White Hart Marauders when they played under the name of the James van Amstel Marauders in memory of one of their members who had sadly died. In the final they outperformed Samurai Barracudas to win 36 - 7. The Barrel competition was also of a high standard, with newcomers Kew Occasionals overcoming a spirited Soy Galacticos side 38 - 5. The Plate competition ended in victory for the Catholic Boys Association, who beat the ND All Stars 31 - 12. The London Stock Exchange team was victorious in the first ever Veterans competition.

The prizes were presented by the Mayor of Harpenden, Michael Weaver, a long-time supporter of the Harpenden club. Also on hand to present the various tankards, prizes of beer and substantial cash prizes were Petrus du Plessis of Saracens and Jo Singleton, who presented the Singleton Cup (so named after her late husband who was a committed sponsor and supporter of Harpenden rugby) to the White Hart Marauders.

The ground was enhanced on the day by a variety of stalls selling drinks and food; sponsors stalls and there was a DJ plus live acts towards the end of the event which drew a crowd from the local area as well as weary players. The weather for the event was generally good, although towards the latter stages of the competition a cloudburst sent spectators running for cover in the stand.
